Missed Connections
…no not that kind. When XNA Game Studio Express v1.0 Refresh is released you'll see that we've made several tweaks to the way a user connects to their Xbox 360 console. This functionality can help with debugging your network or identifying that you mistyped the Connection Key.
Let's take a look at the new "Add Xbox 360" dialog:
If you're familiar with the first release you should notice that there is a new "Test Connection" button as well as a status box with information about the connection. For example lets see what happens if I just enter something without my Xbox 360 console turned on:
As indicated in the status text you can see that we couldn't talk to your Xbox 360, indicating that your Xbox 360 is not reachable due to it not being on the Connect to Computer Screen or network configuration issues.
One of the most common issues that many users of our forums ran into in the XNA Game Launcher was incorrectly typing the Connection Key. The Connection Key can be troublesome on some smaller TV's and the amount of characters can sometimes get people mixed up. So again let me try and test my connection with the Xbox 360 waiting at the Connect to Computer Screen.
So now when you type a Connection Key incorrectly you'll see that there was an attempted connection from an IP address but the connection was rejected because the Connection Key was invalid.
Finally let's take a look at success!
On the Xbox 360 side you'll see "Connected to computer" and the Xbox name to indicate success:
On the PC Side you'll see that the connection succeeded and you can now accept the dialog:
This should help many of you who were having trouble getting connected to your Xbox 360's or just diagnose networking issues. Next I'll try and jot down a little of how we think this might change in the future as well as get your feedback about making the process better. If you have any questions about this new functionality, feel free to ask!
